Here’s an example of software that teaches a serious subject – first
aid- in a way that’s both fun and educational. Kids take the part of
the title character (D.M. can be either a boy or a girl), who is on a quest
to earn a Medical Arts Achievement Badge and win permission to go to summer
camp. Fortunately – at least for M.D. wanna-be D.M. – the local
kids are prone to all sorts of ailments, from cuts, bruises, and bee stings
to appendicitis. D.M. interviews and examines each patient, consults a list
of symptoms in a reference guide, then makes a diagnosis and provides treatment.
The game is not meant to turn your kids into paramedics, but the information
(which has been vetted by real doctors) makes for a light-handed medical primer.
